General Information about Izmir
Izmir is the third-largest city in Turkey, located on the western coast in the Aegean Region. As of 2024, its population is approximately 4.5 million. Positioned along the Aegean Sea, Izmir is one of Turkey’s most important cities with its natural harbor, mild climate, and rich history.
Known in antiquity as Smyrna, the city’s history dates back 8,500 years. It is believed to be the birthplace of Homer. Throughout its history, Izmir was a significant center during the Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods. In 1922, the liberation of Izmir marked a turning point in the Turkish War of Independence, symbolizing the establishment of the modern Republic of Turkey.
Today, Izmir is called the “Pearl of the Aegean”. With its modern lifestyle, wide coastline, historic landmarks, fairs, cultural activities, and liberal atmosphere, it is one of Turkey’s most dynamic cities. It also hosts the Izmir International Fair, one of the country’s largest international events.
Geographically, Izmir is surrounded by the Gediz River delta, the Aegean Sea, and surrounding mountains. It has a Mediterranean climate: hot and dry summers, mild and rainy winters. Agriculture, tourism, industry, and port trade are vital parts of the city’s economy. With its universities and young population, Izmir is also a major student city.

Bus Terminal
Izmir Intercity Bus Terminal (İZOTAŞ), located in Bornova, is one of the largest in Turkey. It provides thousands of daily services to cities like Istanbul, Ankara, Antalya, Bursa, and Konya. The terminal offers modern waiting lounges, cafes, shops, and minibuses to nearby districts. Access to the city center is possible via metro, buses, taxis, and shuttles.
What to Eat in Izmir
- Boyoz: A local pastry usually served with boiled eggs.
